A Warm Welcome Home: How The Hawthorns Clevedon Supported My Return to the UK

After spending 18 years abroad, the thought of returning to the UK for retirement seemed daunting. For one of Hawthorns Clevedon resident, the transition from a Mediterranean island to a safe and secure home in Clevedon was made seamless with the support and care provided by the staff and community. Read on to discover how The Hawthorns Clevedon offered more than just a beautiful apartment, it became a place of comfort, independence, and connection during a pivotal life moment.

Jill Jorgensen: “My Husband worked for Ministry of Defence and was posted to Cyprus in 2005. When he retired we decided to stay in Cyprus and enjoy life on a lovely Mediterranean  Island. Unfortunately he died suddenly and I decided to return to the UK, with the encouragement of my family. Then Covid hit and it was such a shock to be on my own and unable to pursue my plans for returning to the UK. As soon as I was able to travel I flew back and began my search, not an easy task but with the help of family and friends decided on The Hawthorns.

The Hawthorns is not a Care Home but it is a safe and secure place with lovely apartments.  The Hawthorns is quite a unique concept in the UK but there are many similar “retirement hotels” in other countries.

Returning to the UK after a long time abroad is quite daunting but The Hawthorns staff made the transition as easy as possible.  I was given plenty of advice and support, both before, during and after moving.

I have been at The Hawthorns for 20 months now after living abroad for 18 years. I have nothing but praise for the welcome I was given. I have a lovely apartment overlooking the Bristol Channel and the housekeeping staff service it on a weekly basis. Meals are served in the main dining room, they are varied and very well presented. There are plenty of activities including Yoga, Keep Fit, Pottery, Art and many more.

I was very unsure about returning to the UK but have been delighted by the way I have been able to settle at The Hawthorns. This is a great place to be with plenty of support from helpful and caring staff who respect ones independence.

A big thank you to all the staff and residents.”
