The busy city of Chelmsford, with its racecourse, and the attractive towns of Ipswich, Colchester, Bishop’s Stortford and Saffron Walden are all within striking distance. A little further afield, the big open skies and picturesque landscapes of the Dedham Vale and Stour Valley, an Area of Outstanding Beauty, are within an hour’s drive. Some lovely gardens such as Audley End at Saffron Walden, Beth Chatto’s Garden near Colchester and the RHS Hyde Hall south of Chelmsford repay a visit, whatever the season.

Looking seawards, the ancient town of Maldon on the Blackwater Estuary is a great place for boat trips and Southend-on-Sea and Clacton-on-Sea are lively seaside resorts.
